Villa's Europe form meets City's perfect league start
Manchester City go to Villa Park on Saturday for the early kick-off, and the match arrives with two kinds of form attached to it. City have won all seven of their Premier League games. Aston Villa have won all three of their Champions League games and only two of their seven in the league.
Kick-off is at 12.30pm local time, 11.30am UTC. City lead the table on 21 points. Villa are 12th on eight. Nothing about the league table suggests a contest between equals, and nothing about Villa's European record suggests a side that should be 12th.
The table before matchweek eight
Seven rounds have produced a clear leader and a crowded chasing pack. City have scored 19 and conceded seven. Arsenal are three points back with 11 scored and five conceded, and Brighton are a further two behind with the best attacking record in the division at 23 goals.
| Pos | Team | P | W | D | L | GF | GA | Pts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Manchester City | 7 | 7 | 0 | 0 | 19 | 7 | 21 |
| 2 | Arsenal | 7 | 6 | 0 | 1 | 11 | 5 | 18 |
| 3 | Brighton | 7 | 5 | 1 | 1 | 23 | 5 | 16 |
| 4 | Chelsea | 7 | 4 | 1 | 2 | 17 | 13 | 13 |
| 5 | Liverpool | 7 | 3 | 3 | 1 | 9 | 8 | 12 |
| 6 | Brentford | 7 | 2 | 4 | 1 | 13 | 8 | 10 |
| 12 | Aston Villa | 7 | 2 | 2 | 3 | 7 | 11 | 8 |
Villa's line is the one that needs explaining. Two wins, two draws, three defeats, seven goals scored in seven matches. Four clubs have scored fewer, and none of them is in the top half. Yet the same squad has scored 12 goals in three European matches and conceded three.
Below the top six the division compresses quickly. Brentford, Leeds and Everton are all on 10 points, and Villa's eight leaves them level with Newcastle and one clear of Manchester United. A win on Saturday would move them above the three clubs on 10.
City's seven from seven
Nineteen goals in seven games is an average of 2.71 per match. The seven conceded is not the best record in the division, because Arsenal and Brighton have each conceded five, but no club has combined that scoring rate with a perfect record.
Enzo Maresca's side also won in Europe this week, 5-1 against AEK Athens, a result that moved them to six points from three matchdays in the Champions League. That is the context of Saturday: a team arriving at Villa Park with seven league wins behind it and a midweek scoring spree in front of it.
Villa's split season
Villa beat Viking 3-1 on Wednesday to make it three wins from three in Europe, with 12 goals scored and three conceded across those matches. In the league the numbers run the other way: seven scored, 11 conceded, and a goal difference of minus four.
The obvious explanation is the level of the opposition, and it is not a complete one. Viking are not City, but Villarreal and Feyenoord are not either. What the European matches show is a side that scores when it can press high and counter into space. What the league matches show is a side that struggles when opponents sit deeper and force it to build from the back. Whether that pattern is tactical or simply a small sample is the question the next month will answer.
What the market says
The prices make City clear favourites and stop short of making the game a formality. City are priced at -155, which is a decimal price of 1.65 and an implied probability of about 60.6 per cent. The draw is +340, or 4.40, and Villa are +380, or 4.80. The over/under line sits at 3.5 goals, one of three fixtures this weekend priced that high.
Strip the bookmaker margin and the market's view is roughly 58 per cent City, 22 per cent draw and 20 per cent Villa. A 20 per cent chance is not a small number, and it is close to what the European record would justify if it carried over. The betting page explains how those prices convert into probabilities.
Haaland, and the shape of the afternoon
Reports on Friday had Erling Haaland available and in line to start. City have not confirmed their line-up, and team sheets are due an hour before kick-off, so the only confirmed fact about the XI is that the market expects a full-strength attack. Haaland's presence changes the geometry of the game: with him, City can play direct into the box and pin both centre-backs; without him, the build-up moves wider and slower.
Villa's best chance is the one their European games have shown them: defend the first pass, win the ball in midfield and attack the space City leave when their full-backs push on. That is a plan that requires discipline for 90 minutes, and Villa have managed it for 90 minutes three times in Europe this season.
What a result would do
A City win takes them to 24 points, with Arsenal able to reach 21 by beating Everton at home. A draw leaves City on 22. A Villa win takes them to 11 and would put them level with the teams competing for the European places rather than the ones avoiding the bottom half.
The rest of the round points the same way. Chelsea are -140 at home to Tottenham, Liverpool are +115 to beat Brighton at Anfield, Manchester United are +110 against Bournemouth and Arsenal are -220 to beat Everton. The market expects the top two to win and expects the chasing pack to keep dropping points, which is exactly the pattern that has produced a three-point gap after seven games.
The league table for the whole division is on the Premier League page, and the European table that makes Villa's start look so different is on the Champions League page. Both will look different by Sunday evening. The question for Saturday is which version of Villa turns up.
- City: seven wins from seven, 19 goals scored, seven conceded, 21 points.
- Villa: two wins from seven in the league, three from three in Europe, 12 goals in those three games.
- Prices: City -155, draw +340, Villa +380, over/under 3.5 goals.
- Kick-off: Saturday 24 October, 12.30pm local time at Villa Park.
