Friday night odds: PSG at Le Havre, Lille v Lens
Four league matches across three countries make up Friday night's card, and the prices tell a story that the league tables already hint at. Paris Saint-Germain travel to the bottom club in Ligue 1, Lille host Lens in the northern derby, Villarreal meet Espanyol in La Liga, and two Bundesliga sides level on points meet in Elversberg.
All four fixtures kick off on Friday 30 October, with Le Havre against PSG first at 18:00 GMT and Lille against Lens last at 20:05 GMT. The numbers below are the pre-match prices in our feed, and they move, so treat them as a snapshot rather than a promise.
The prices
| Fixture | League | Home | Draw | Away | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Le Havre v Paris Saint-Germain | Ligue 1 | +900 | +600 | -450 | 3.5 |
| Lille v Lens | Ligue 1 | +135 | +250 | +185 | 2.5 |
| Villarreal v Espanyol | LaLiga | -215 | +380 | +500 | 3.5 |
| SV Elversberg v Mainz | Bundesliga | +200 | +265 | +105 | 3.5 |
A minus price is the amount you must stake to win 100. A plus price is the amount you win on a stake of 100. So Le Havre at +900 returns nine times the stake if the bottom club beats the champions, and PSG at -450 requires 450 to return 100 in profit.
Three of the four games carry a total of 3.5 goals and only the derby sits at 2.5, which is the market's way of saying that Friday's card is expected to be open rather than cautious. The exception is the game with the most at stake in the stands, and that is usually where the goals dry up.
Le Havre against the champions
Le Havre are 18th in Ligue 1 with two points from eight matches: no wins, two draws, six defeats, eight goals scored and 15 conceded. PSG lead the division on 17 points from eight games, with five wins, two draws and one defeat, and a goal difference of plus seven.
The price reflects that gap almost perfectly. PSG at -450 implies a probability of roughly 82 per cent before the bookmaker's margin, which is high for an away fixture but not unreasonable against a side without a win. The interesting number is the total of 3.5 goals, which suggests the market expects PSG to win comfortably rather than narrowly.
French reporting this week has PSG without Ousmane Dembele, Marquinhos and Nuno Mendes for the trip, and the club has not confirmed a return date for any of them. That is the sort of team news that moves a price, and it is also the sort that makes a heavy favourite less attractive than the raw numbers suggest. The market's doubt here is the margin rather than the result, and that is exactly where three missing starters matter most.
Lille and Lens in the north
The derby is the most balanced game on the card. Lille are third on 15 points from eight matches, with four wins, three draws and one defeat. Lens are seventh on 13 points, with four wins, one draw and three defeats. Three points separate them and both have a European place to defend.
Lens have scored 16 goals in eight matches, a total bettered only by Rennes and Marseille, who have 18 each. Lille have conceded six, fewer than any other side in the division. A home price of +135 for Lille, a draw at +250 and Lens at +185 is a market that sees three outcomes as genuinely possible, and the total of 2.5 goals says the same.
The build-up has been unusual. Lens banned their own supporters from the away section after incidents at a European match in Bruges, a decision reported this week and one that removes the most volatile part of the away end from the fixture. Derbies are usually priced on atmosphere as much as form; this one has had the atmosphere subtracted.
Villarreal and the La Liga middle
Villarreal are 10th in La Liga with 12 points from 10 matches, three wins, three draws and four defeats, 15 goals scored and 14 conceded. Espanyol are 18th with eight points from the same number of games, two wins, two draws and six defeats, and a goal difference of minus two.
Villarreal at -215 is the shortest home price on the card, and the gap between 12 points and eight explains it more than anything dramatic in either side's form. The total of 3.5 goals fits a Villarreal side that has been involved in high-scoring games all season: their 10 matches have produced 29 goals, 15 scored and 14 conceded.
Espanyol's own numbers are less open. Twelve scored and 14 conceded in 10 matches is the profile of a team that loses narrowly, and it is why the draw at +380 is not the longest price on the card despite the league positions.
Elversberg and Mainz level on points
In the Bundesliga, Mainz and Elversberg are seventh and eighth with 10 points each from seven matches, and identical records of three wins, one draw and three defeats. Mainz have scored 16 and conceded 13; Elversberg have scored 12 and conceded 15.
The market makes Mainz the favourite at +105 despite the away trip, with Elversberg at +200 and the draw at +265. That is a narrow edge in a game between two clubs with the same points total, and it reflects the three-goal difference in attacking output rather than league position.
- Le Havre have two points from eight Ligue 1 matches and no wins.
- PSG lead Ligue 1 on 17 points with a goal difference of plus seven.
- Lille and Lens are separated by three points in third and seventh.
- Lens have scored 16 goals, behind only Rennes and Marseille.
- Villarreal and Espanyol are 10th and 18th in La Liga.
- Elversberg and Mainz both have 10 points from seven games.
Friday's card is a good example of how prices compress information. The Ligue 1 table explains the PSG number, the La Liga table explains Villarreal's, and the derby is the one game where the table explains almost nothing. Our betting section has the rest of the weekend's prices.
