Between the written test and the offer letter at most technical recruitments sits the stage that decides everything for diploma holders: the trade test and the technical interview. A mining contractor shortlisting survey assistants, a maintenance firm hiring fitters, a coal company screening technician apprentices, all of them eventually put the candidate in front of a machine, a drawing or a panel of engineers and ask them to prove the diploma means something.

What a trade test looks like

A trade test is a practical examination set by an employer. For a mechanical diploma holder it might mean reading an engineering drawing and identifying errors, measuring a component with a vernier caliper and micrometer, or explaining how a given job would be machined. For a civil holder, levelling instruments, tapes, bricks and estimation sheets appear. For a mining holder, questions lean on safety practice, ventilation basics and survey instruments.

The test measures three things at once: whether your hands remember the workshop, whether your eyes can read technical information, and whether you work calmly when watched. Candidates fail it less often on knowledge than on nerves, fumbling an instrument they have used a hundred times because someone is timing them.

The interview panel's real questions

Technical interviews for diploma roles are rarely trick sessions. The panel typically includes an engineer from the hiring department and someone from personnel, and their questions follow the candidate's own record. They pick a subject from your marksheet and ask what you did in its practical classes. They point to your apprenticeship or workshop entry and ask you to describe one job end to end. They ask what you would do first in a simple site scenario.

The pattern behind these questions is a search for authenticity. A candidate who did the work answers concretely and briefly: the instruments used, the steps in order, the mistake they made and fixed. A candidate whose records were borrowed speaks in generalities, and the panel has heard every generality before. The interview is less an examination than a verification that the person in the chair matches the file in their hands.

Building workshop memory that survives the exam hall

The cruel detail of a diploma is that practical skill fades. A student who was confident on the lathe in the second semester may be hesitant by the sixth, having spent two years on theory. Employers know this, which is why the trade test exists. The defence is deliberate maintenance: a few hours in the workshop in the final semester, re-measuring, re-reading drawings, re-running the instruments, restores more confidence than any amount of reading.

For mining students the equivalent is revision of the statutory and practical vocabulary: the gases tested and their instruments, the purpose of ventilation fittings, the survey chain of a working face. A candidate who can speak this language fluently signals field readiness; one who memorised it for a theory paper two years ago and never revisited it sounds exactly like that.

The five stories every candidate should prepare

Interview preparation for diploma roles reduces to a small set of concrete narratives, rehearsed until they are natural. Every final-year student should be able to tell, in two or three minutes each:

  • One workshop or laboratory job completed independently, with instruments and steps named.
  • One mistake made during practical work and how it was found and corrected.
  • One group project and the specific part you personally contributed.
  • One subject you struggled with and what you did about it.
  • Why this branch, this employer and this role, answered without flattery.

These stories do double duty. They answer the panel's direct questions, and they rescue the candidate from the open question, tell us about yourself, that otherwise produces a rambling biography. A prepared story is also honest by construction, because it comes from your own record, and honesty is the quality the entire process is designed to detect.

Documents, dress and the last ten percent

Selection processes at this level are lost surprisingly often on administration. Original certificates in a folder, copies in the order the notice lists them, photographs, identity proof: the checklist is trivial and the failures are weekly. Names must match across the Class 10 certificate, marksheets and identity documents, because verification teams reject on mismatch without negotiating.

Appearance and manner carry more weight than students like to admit. Clean simple clothes, shoes that are not a statement, a greeting, and answers addressed to the whole panel rather than one friendly face. None of this substitutes for skill, but selection between two equal candidates is made on exactly these margins, and the candidate who prepared the substantive ninety percent owes it to themselves not to forfeit the last ten.
